Saber Group, Inc. Updates... Last update: February 12, 2011 From MSP to MIT After more than 24 years of service with the Massachusetts State Police, I retired on December 18, 2010. The impetus for the decision was a call from the man who had tasked me to create the first fulltime Firearms Training Unit for the MSP back in late 1999 -- Colonel John DiFava (MSP, Retired). Colonel DiFava had retired from the MSP in 2001 after serving as the interim Director of Aviation Security at Logan International Airport immediately after the 9-11 attacks. He was asked to go to Logan at the request of the Governor and accepted the assignment, even though he had already filed his retirement paperwork and accepted a new position as the Chief of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Police Department. His contributions to bringing stability and organization back to Logan Airport after that dark day were many and had a great positive impact, only adding to his excellent personal and professional reputation. So when I recently received a call from him advising me that "there was a position opening up at MIT that would be perfect" for me, I listened up, even though the thought of retiring was still far from the forefront of my agenda. After all, I was serving as the Commander of Tactical Operations for the MSP at Logan Airport, was within reasonable striking distance on the Captain's promotional list, and working for two of the most professional, competent, and honorable officers the MSP had ever produced, Major Michael Concannon and Captain Richard Lane. As for the work, there was always more to do, and I had planned to continue my career working within the department for at least several more years. But then a funny thing happened. After initially respectfully declining the offer to interview for the position, I began to step back and re-evaluate things. Conversations with my family and closest friends and associates convinced me to explore the option that had been presented to me. The position was comprised of two components: Physical Education Department instructor teaching pistol and serving as the Rangemaster for the pistol and rifle ranges at MIT. After getting over my initial surprise that MIT even had firearms ranges on campus, much less offered pistol as part of the P.E. requirement, I looked into it and discovered that not only did MIT have a long and proud history regarding sport pistol, but that the MIT Pistol Team had won two national championships, defeating teams from across the country to include their counterparts at the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Academies! Intrigued, I did interview for the position, and as the day-long process unfolded I found myself more and more interested. The realization of exactly where I was also began to hit me. I was at MIT, one of the most interesting places in the world. And the reason it was so interesting was for one simple reason -- the people. The students, faculty, alumni, staff -- everyone I met was pleasant, considerate and thoughtful. On top of that you could also feel the electricity in the air generated by the brainpower MIT is internationally renowned for attracting and developing. The final straw that broke the retirement question's back was the consideration that once I was retired, I would also be free to pursue my private training activities unhindered by conflict of interest concerns and the strenuous rules, regulations, policies and procedures that I had been subject to as a member of my beloved MSP. Shortly after completing the interview process I received a call offering me the position. The door was open. I went through. So far I have found it to be a great decision. More time with my family, an interesting place to work, great colleagues, and truly wonderful students to work with. There is also a lot of room for innovation and improvement within the range, the P.E. pistol program -- and myself. While I will always treasure my years spent as a member of the Nation's first state police organization, I am very grateful to finally have the ability to begin implementing the plans to commence Saber Group training operations the way I have envisioned for many years. The original, driving mission that inspired me and the other members of Saber Group to step away from the pack and try a new approach to training and operations still remains. And that mission always has been, and always will be, saving lives on both sides of the badge.

article: Straight-A Shooters Training While most of our training offerings are administered on a contractual basis, we currently have a few open specialized training programs being scheduled. On May 17, 2011, The Municipal Police Institute (MPI) will be hosting a one day seminar at the Grafton Police Department: "Police Pistolcraft - Creating Reality-Based Firearms Training Programs for Departments on a Budget." This seminar is intended for patrol officers, tactical officers, firearms instructors, supervisors, and anyone interested in developing a reality-based firearms training program that will enhance officers' decision making skills in the face of a potential lethal confrontation. This course discusses the importance of reality-based training for both skill development and liability reduction. In addition, the course instructs officers how to design an effective program and still stay within the limitations of the Department’s budget. Please visit MPI's website to register.
